DreamCloud luxury hybrid mattress review

There is an unmatched convenience to the streamlined delivery offerings of a mattress-in-a-box. Yet, DreamCloud stands out from the dozens of mattress-in-a-box brands out there thanks to its thoughtfully designed products, generous policies, and unbeatable prices. 

We wanted to determine if the DreamCloud luxury hybrid mattress is one of the best mattresses you can buy today, so I put it to the test over the course of several weeks. In addition to sleeping on it every night, I subjected the mattress to weight, motion transfer, and edge support tests, all to figure out if it’s a worthwhile buy. Spoiler alert: The answer is yes!

While it is on the firm side, this mattress provided both comfort and support for a great night’s sleep—for both me and my partner, who have extremely differing sleep preferences. In this review, I’ll lay out all the results from my weeks of testing and explain who I think will love the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress.

Who will the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress suit?

• Any sleep position: The mattress has a medium-firm feel that’s appropriate for any sleep position. It offers enough “give” to relieve pressure when sleeping on your side, but it’s also sufficiently supportive for back or stomach sleepers.
• Those looking for a more firm mattress: DreamCloud describes this mattress as a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, so it’s definitely more firm than plush. If you prefer a more sturdy sleep surface, this mattress will likely suit your needs. Those who prefer a more plush sleep surface will likely want to upgrade to the DreamCloud Premier.
• Those looking for a great value: As the base model from DreamCloud, this mattress is a great value, starting at just $699 for a twin size. Plus, it comes with free shipping and returns and free gifts. 
• Those who want an innerspring base: Many mattress-in-a-box models are solely crafted from layers of foam, but the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress has a supportive base layer made up of individually encased innerspring coils.

Setting up the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress 

The DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress shipped quickly, but unfortunately, it didn’t make a great first impression. The mattress is vacuum sealed for shipping, but the box it was packed in was too flimsy to hold the heavy contents. When it arrived at my house, the box was in tatters, and the whole bottom was ripped open. The poor delivery driver barely managed to carry it up to the porch without it totally falling apart. So in terms of packaging, this product definitely has room for improvement, but thankfully, the mattress itself was still in good shape. 

Given the sorry state of the box, my partner and I decided to bring the rolled-up mattress inside. The queen-size mattress weighs 85 pounds, and it took both of us to carry the vacuum-sealed form into the house and up the stairs to our bedroom. I definitely wouldn’t have been able to carry it myself—not only is it quite heavy, but the shape is fairly awkward and hard for one person to hold. 

Once we got the mattress into the bedroom, all we had to do was set it on the bed frame and cut open the vacuum-sealed plastic. The mattress took over from there, quickly puffing up into its full size. The brand notes that it can take up to 72 hours for the mattress to reach its full 14-inch height, but you’re able to sleep on it after just a few hours. We set up the mattress in the morning, and by that night, we were able to use it without any problems. It was perfectly supportive, and there weren’t any unpleasant off-gassing odors. 

What’s the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress like to sleep on?

Overall comfort and firmness
When you first lay down on the mattress, you’re welcomed by a layer of plush quilted foam, but this layer is quite thin—probably just an inch or two. Underneath that, we found the mattress to be quite firm. There’s enough “give” that my hip and shoulder can sink in when sleeping on my side, but I never felt like I was being swallowed up by the mattress. Personally, I prefer a firmer mattress, and overall, I thought the DreamCloud Hybrid was amazing to sleep on. I found myself tossing and turning less than with our old mattress, and I couldn’t wait to get into bed every night. 

My partner wasn’t as enthusiastic about the mattress, though. He agrees that it’s comfortable and provides sufficient support, and he also said it’s much better than our old mattress, which was getting lumpy. However, he wishes it was plusher and cradled his body better. 

Weight Test

To get a more qualitative measure of the mattress’s firmness, I stacked up two 10-pound weights in the middle of the bed. The weights easily sunk into the plush top layer of the mattress, but they only created a small divot in the foam layer beneath—maybe 1 or 1.5 inches at the most. This test backs up my initial thought that the mattress is quite firm and supportive, and I’d even go so far as to rate it a 7 or 7.5 out of 10 in terms of firmness. 

Breathability and cooling
I generally sleep hot, so I’m often wary of traditional memory foam mattresses, which retain a lot of body heat during the night. However, the DreamCloud mattress has a layer of gel-infused memory foam that helps to get rid of unwanted heat, and over the course of testing, I never found myself to be too warm during the night. On the flip side of the coin, my partner sleeps cold, and he agreed that the mattress does a good job regulating temperature, never leaving him too hot or overly chilled at night. 

Motion Isolation

To test how well the DreamCloud mattress minimizes motion transfer, we put a glass of water on one end of the bed and then walked around on the other end. When the glass was at the foot of the mattress and my partner was at the head, he was able to jump around without disturbing the glass. However, there’s typically not that much distance between us when we’re sleeping, and when he walked closer to the glass, it bounced around quite perilously. 

In actual practice, I thought the mattress’s motion isolation abilities were OK, at best. I was able to feel any time my partner rolled over during the night, and if one of us came to bed after the other was asleep, there was noticeable movement when we climbed into bed. It didn’t bother us too much, but if you’re a light sleeper, the motion transfer might prove to be bothersome during the night. 

Edge Support

One of the reasons I prefer hybrid or innerspring mattresses is because they offer better edge support than memory foam. My partner and I share our queen-size bed with our 50-pound dog, and I often find myself being pushed to the very edge of the mattress throughout the night. For this reason, it’s important to me that the mattress has supportive edges that don’t make me feel like I’m going to roll off. 

To provide better edge support, the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress has a “heavy-duty gauge edge shield,” which is a row of thicker innerspring coils around the edges of the mattress (from my understanding, at least). True to its claims, we found that the mattress has great edge support, only sinking a few inches if you sit on it. I never felt like I was going to fall off the bed, even if I was laying right on the edge of the mattress.

 DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress design and construction

The DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress has a five-layer construction that includes both innersprings and multiple layers of foam. At the base of the mattress, a layer of individually wrapped innerspring coils provides support and adapts to your body as you sleep.

Above that is the “essential base layer,” which is made up of supportive foam. The middle layer is referred to as the “Sink-in-Just-Right Layer,” which provides some give while helping to minimize motion transfer. The second layer from the top is pressure-activated high-density gel memory foam, which contours to your body and helps dissipate heat to keep you comfortable throughout the night. Finally, the mattress’s top layer is made up of quilted foam with a fish-scale design and covered in a super soft cashmere-blend fabric.

All of the foam layers that make up this mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re free from potentially harmful materials and give off minimal emissions. 

Ordering and delivery 

DreamCloud mattresses are available on the DreamCloud website or through Amazon, but when you purchase directly through the brand, you tend to get “freebies” such as a free mattress protector, sheets, and/or pillows. The mattress ships for free and is delivered via FedEx, and it typically arrives in just two to four days. The box will be left outside your home, and you’re responsible for bringing it inside and setting it up. 

DreamCloud warranty and trial period

Like many mattress-in-a-box brands, DreamCloud has a generous home trial and return policy—after all, you’re not able to test out the mattress before you buy, so there’s a chance you may not like it. For this reason, the brand offers a 365-night risk-free trial, though you do have to sleep on the mattress for at least 30 days before you can initiate a return.

If after 30 days you decide you don’t want the mattress, a DreamCloud Sleep Concierge will work with you to have it donated or disposed of through local organizations within your community, and you’ll receive a full refund, issued in the form of the original payment. If you receive any promotional items when you bought the mattress, the brand allows you to keep, return, donate, or dispose of them when you decide to return the mattress.

DreamCloud also backs its products with a limited lifetime warranty. The warranty only applies to the original owner of the mattress, and the mattress must have been used on an appropriate base and not subject to misuse. During the first 10 years of ownership, the brand will replace your mattress with a brand new DreamCloud at no charge if there are any defects, including impressions of more than 1.5 inches, and after 10 years, the brand will repair, re-cover, or replace your mattress as needed for a small fee.

How does the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress rate online?

Out of more than 7,000 reviews on the DreamCloud website, this mattress has an average rating of 4.8 stars. (However, these reviews are for both the standard Hybrid and the Premier option.) Among those who rated the mattress highly, many people comment on the brand’s quick delivery, reasonable prices, and the comfort of the mattress, which many say helps with their back pain.

If you browse through the product’s lower ratings, on the other hand, the most common complaint is that the mattress is too firm. As our tests revealed, this mattress is definitely on the firmer side of the medium-firm spectrum, and it’s not well-suited for those who like a plush sleep surface. 

Is the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress worth it?

If you like your mattress to be on the firm side, the DreamCloud Hybrid Mattress is an unbeatable value. It’s supportive for a variety of sleep positions, and it has superior edge support thanks to its innerspring base. Plus, the brand offers an impressive 365-night in-home trial, as well as a limited lifetime warranty, so you can rest assured you won’t be stuck with a product that you don’t absolutely love. 

However, this mattress isn’t well-suited for those who prefer a more plush sleep surface or like to sink into their bed. If you fall into that category, you may want to upgrade to the DreamCloud Premier Mattress, which has a similar construction with the addition of a 1-inch high-loft memory foam pillow top, for extra cushion.
