 What are after Christmas sales?

They're a sales period after Christmas. You can grab discounts on a range of homeware and appliances that will save you money as you start the New Year.

The more detailed answer is that retailers buy in lots of extra stock in the build up to Christmas. This is so they don’t sell out of gifts in the busy holiday period. The day after Christmas, however, demand drops, and they’re left with a heap of unsold merchandise that costs a lot to store. Retailers therefore drop their prices, shifting units for cheap to try to reduce their overheads while still making a profit. This means it’s a great time to shop, because prices are lower than usual, saving you money.

When are after-Christmas sales?

There’s lots of deals on offer throughout the holidays but the real action starts from the 26th December into the first few days of the New Year.

Are after Christmas sales as good as Black Friday?

There’s much less fanfare than Black Friday, but sales can be as good, if not better. It depends on what you’re buying and where.

For example, the Hamilton Beach Big Mouth juicer (opens in new tab) (featured in our guide to the best centrifugal juicers) dropped to its lowest price of the year on January 3rd, not Black Friday, where it was still discounted but not as much.

What was on sale last year?

We saw big discounts last year. The best sales were at Bed Bath & Beyond, where you could save up to 70% off across thousands of products (opens in new tab). You could grab up to 60% off at Macy's (opens in new tab), and there were also products on markdown at Home Depot (opens in new tab), Lowe's (opens in new tab), and Best Buy (opens in new tab)
